Sweet Baby J'ai is a woman who clearly loves what she does. She is a critically acclaimed singer, actress, playwright, songwriter, producer, and arranger who has toured the world with her unique blend of jazz, blues and storytelling, performing on stages and in theaters from New York to Casablanca. She grew up with a musical family in a house filled with all sorts of interesting characters who would help mold the young girl's love of theater and music. Although J'ai is known for her energetic stage presence and powerful vocals, some critics describe her as a "jazz singer", others as a "blues singer” but all agree that this versatile singer-songwriter is a "storyteller". She can't be contained by one genre of music. She has performed in many styles, from soul, folk, jazz, blues, pop, spoken word, and occasionally even the diva singer fronting the orchestra. Sweet Baby J'ai is an artist that transcends jazz and broadens its audience to the masses, making America 's greatest original art form accessible to all music lovers.
Her theatrical background includes the award-winning roles of Mary, in “The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie”, Josephine Baker in “C’est Bon”, and Blues Speak Woman in George C. Wolfe’s, “Spunk”. She has received critical acclaim for her role as Billie Holiday in the musicals, Sang Sista’ Sang and Voices, Beneatha, in A Raisin in the Sun, Destiny in Lady of the Night, and as herself in The Midnight Hour among others. Her play, 3 Women: A Dramatic Tribute to the Divas of Jazz and Blues, which she co-wrote and starred in, has toured theaters both nationally and internationally. She has appeared commercials and films. Her most recent film, one she wrote titled, Bessie, Billie & Ruth was chosen as the official selection at the Pan African Film Festival, and has been viewed on PBS stations across the nation in several markets.
J’ai is also a recording artist with award winning cds to her credit. She has been heard on radio and television both nationally and internationally. She has performed extensively in the U.S. Europe and Asia and has been featured at numerous concert halls, festivals, clubs and benefits, from the Walt Disney Concert Hall, Ford Ampitheater to Tokyo Concert Hall, Casablanca's Super Dome and more. She has won awards and been recognized as “Best Entertainer”, “Pick of the Week” and “Pick of the Month”, many times. She has shared the stage with such luminaries as, Melissa Etheridge, Herbie Hancock, Etta James, Jill Scott, Joe Sample, Tom Waits, Koko Taylor, Patrice Rushen, Sheila E., Tramaine Hawkins, Stanley Turrentine and the late Nel Carter and Eddie Harris, to name a few. If you don't yet know her, let me advise you that those who come across her path fall instantly in love with her deep, powerful, sometimes playful and sensuous voice. As a blues singer, if she could have chosen any time to come of age, it would have been during The Harlem Renaissance and most certainly with this particular cast of talented characters.
